Books & Beyond Guidelines
31 October 2007
Our program begins on November 2nd and ends the week of May 12th, 2008. Every child who reaches the goal of completing and turning in 10 reading sheets will receive a "Gold" medal at our Books and Beyond assembly, held at the end of the school year. Please remember that this reading program is voluntary and non-competitive! We want all students to succeed, but more importantly, we want them to have fun while earning their medals.General Rules
- Turn in your reading sheets throughout the 6-month program: do not accumulate them and hand them in all together at the end! We award small prizes when each reading sheet is submitted. This helps us keep up with the overall count -- remember, we're aiming for 1,500,000 pages school-wide.
- Reading sheets may ONLY be turned in during a student's class library time.
- Prizes: when you turn in your reading sheet, you'll receive a small prize from the library's treasure chest. You may turn in as many reading sheets as you've properly completed, but you'll receive a maximum of 2 prizes per library visit. Your special marker will move one station per reading sheet on our Books & Beyond "Let Reading Take You Out of This World" reading board located in the library.
- Be sure to include your first and last name and room number on every sheet. To receive credit for each reading sheet, the log must be signed by both a parent and your teacher.
- Please write book titles on the lines provided on the reading sheet: One title per line, with a maximum of ten titles per sheet. Please do not write on the back of the reading sheet and do not add extra lines or titles. Do not number the sheets on the front.
Recording Books for Kindergarten through 3rd Grade
- Kindergarten and 1st grade parents: please fill out the reading sheets for your child. Second and third graders may fill out their own sheets (neatly, please!).
- If you read an "Easy Reader" book, write the title on one line only, no matter how many pages the book contains. Examples of "easy reader" books are Dr. Seuss titles, Clifford, Frog and Toad, and Disney Books. These books contain more pictures than words and usually have less than fifty pages. Easy Reader books checked out of our library have red tape on the spine. No page numbers are required for these books.
- If you read a "Chapter" book, page numbers are required. Chapter books have more than 50 pages and contain more words than pictures. Please list chapter books by pages, recording 25 pages per line (see example below). If you are within five pages, you may round up to the next line: a 71-page book may go on three lines, with the third line reading pp.50-71; however, a 69-page book goes on 2 lines, with the second line reading pp.25-69. BW Library chapter books have blue tape on the spine.

Recording Books for Grades 4 and 5
- Each reading sheet must contain exactly 250 pages. If a book totals less than 250 pages, please read additional pages from another book. Write the title(s) and the number of pages on as many lines as needed to complete the sheet. Any remaining pages should be recorded on another reading sheet. Remember to include the title, author, and pages on the new sheet.
- Only one "Easy Reader" book will be accepted per sheet. "Easy Readers" include Dr. Seuss, Clifford, joke books, some Captain Underpants, and Ricky Ricotta, for example. Students may count only 1/4 of the pages of "Easy Reader" books.
- Sheets must be completed with good penmanship. All information must be legible, and the sheet must be signed by both a parent and teacher.
